THE HISTORY OF NEPAL TEA DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION
1863 AD, the year when the first tea plantation was commenced by the then Governor General of Eastern Nepal, Gajaraj Singh Thapa. The dawn of a new beginning for the development of the tea industry in Nepal. The first tea estates, Ilam Tea Estate and Soktim Tea Estate Belongs to Nepal Tea Development Corporation ltd which is now under Triveni Group.
Most of the gardens are located in the eastern region on the foothills of the Mountain Kanchenjunga (8598m). Offerings from the best tea gardens, this unique Himalayan tea is cultivated in the higher grounds under the protection of high Himalayan Peaks where the tea buds mingle with the misty morning fogs,cool morning breeze and the delightful afternoon sun.
This company was established in 1966 AD having 7 Tea Estates, out of which 5 Tea Estates were Planted under British Technical Collaboration and 2 Tea estates were planted by Cornel Gajraj Singh Thapa in 1863 AD. The tea seeds were presented by the Chinese Emperor. The Government of Nepal Handed over all these Tea Estate to Triveni Group by privatization scheme in 2000 AD.
